No, I have not gone crazy,
and as a credit counselor I get to play
the role of priest every day. I get to
hear all the details of a persons
life that may have played a role in
contributing to the debt problem. For
some it is a divorce, and in this case I
need to tread lightly because there
may still be anger from the divorce which
can get in the way of focusing on a solution. The problem could also have been
related to a business failure,
which in the mind of the debtor could be tied to
many reasons but
rarely the debtors own shortfalls. In other words it is
unfortunately
human nature to blame everything and everyone else for our
failures but ourselves.
This
presents a real problem during a free credit counseling session
in which the
counselor is trying to understand the nature of the debt and
what might be some
appropriate solutions. You know, get to the bottom
line so I can get to the
next person who needs help, especially since my
counseling sessions are all
free.
One
of the things any counselor in any area of life must learn, or is
taught, is to
maintain control over the conversation, and for obvious
reasons. In the debt
relief world the counselor wants just enough
information to help determine the
future income situation, because to
make any type of structured debt relief program
work you will need at
least some income.
Additionally,
it takes some time to explain the nature of these programs
as they have become
more and more complex with the passage of time and
the addition of new
regulations.
Finally,
here is the other problem, and this is a big one. Often times the consumer in
debt feels much better once they understand that there is a
viable solution for
them and
they also feel unburdened because they have
just “confessed their sins”, so to
speak. Since they now feel so much better
they have a tendency to put off getting the debt help because they now know there are solutions, and so put off taking
the next necessary steps, making the matter worse.
